Shinshinto Soshu School HandachiNagasa - 63.25cmsSori - 1.2cmsTsuka - 25.75cmsKissaki - O-Kissaki (long)Hamon - Irregular Notare with greater depth at cutting area.ConditionThe blade is in good condition with Shinogi, Yokote lines clear and well defined. It is made with very definate Soshu School features. A flawless sword with tight Itame Hada, a few scratches and rub marks. Interestingly the Nakago which maybe Ubu is cut in the Sotoba-gata style the shape of a Buddist grave marker KoshiraeThe saya is original to the sword. Cleaned and relacquered is mounted with an Iron Kojiri and carved Iron Koikuchi. The Original Tsuka (included with the sword) has lacquered leather Ito, no Menuki and Iron Fuchi, Kashira. We have remounted the sword with a new handle using Iron Handachi mounts and Shishi Lion design Menuki all dating from the mid 1800's. The signed Tsuba is Mokko shaped with carved Dragon and Cloud design made of Iron with brass inlay. CommentsThe handle was replaced as the original wood core has become loose. The type of Tsuka is of a style commonly mounted to Satsuma Rebellion blades (simple and functional). This Soshu style mid-late 1800's sword is extremely sharp and was made to be a functional weapon, short, well balanced with a long kissaki and wide Machi ideal for slashing and stabbing. Mounted as a Handachi and almost certainly used during the Satsuma uprising in a well defined koto style would make a very researchable sword for any collection. Very reasonably priced at $2900- |
